Bienvenue!
Pardon my French because this post is going to be about a new artisan French bakery in town, Eric Kayser.
Yes you read that right, after major success in opening branches all over the globe (New York, Dubai, Tokyo, etc.), Eric Kayser is finally opening his first branch in Indonesia. Seeing French artisan bakery open up branches one by one in Jakarta, I think it's time for French artisan bakery phenomenon.
The store concept of Eric Kayser is somewhat different than any other French artisan bakery, it's more minimalist. You can have their signature bread dine in or you can do take-away. Their product ranges from bread, pastries, tarts, sandwiches to mains. They also offer selections of drinks like coffee and tea.
I went there with my family and each of us decided to try different pastries. After picking them up, we asked the staff to bring them to our table since we'll have them dine-in. The service was quite slow, and we had to wait for like 20 minutes for the pastries to be delivered. I thought what's with the slow service, since they just had to put them into plates and the crowd that night wasn't so big either.
Pain Au Chocolat ( IDR 20 K)
I had a quite high expectation on this one, since I always managed to try this particular pastry whenever I go to French bakery. The reason is simple, to see how good they are with their puff pastry. Texture wise, I don't really like it. I expected the puff pastry to be crispy on the outside and soft but flaky inside. But this pain au chocolate is not so crispy, and doesn't make much 'crunch' sound when I first ate it. And inside, it has sort of the softness of bread texture. It's just not my kind of pastry.
Lemon Tart ( IDR 40 K)
My sister ordered this lemon tart and at first I wasn't sure to try or not to try because I wasn't very fond of lemon. But she successfully convinced me to try and I finally took a big bite. I was surprised at first because the lemon tasted so strong. As I keep chewing, it's actually good and pretty refreshing. The pastry shell wasn't so hard to slice but I smelled egg and I was thinking that maybe the shell was a bit undercooked. But overall, the taste was decent.
Eclair Chocolat ( IDR 36 K)
Thank God my sister ordered the eclair chocolat because it was the savior of the night! I heard before about their famous eclairs, and so now I know what's the fuss is all about. Their eclairs are amazing, and the size is just right for me. It's not too big, and I know it might appear as small to some people but don't judge a book by its cover! because....
The filling makes it even better! The chocolate is not too sweet, perhaps they're using dark chocolate. I personally enjoyed every bite.
Overall, it was a nice visit and maybe I'll come back some other time but not in the near future. For me, the pastry lacks the 'wow' factor that probably can make me come back for more. It's not that the pastries are not good, but they are just decent. But the winner is still the eclair, and I might come back to try different flavors.
